What’s A GMO?

There has been a lot of talk about GMO products in the news in recent years. People hear about the perceived dangers GMOs when it comes to foods or private label nutritional supplements, but they might not know what it is without a little bit of research.

What Are GMOs?

GMOs are genetically modified organisms. That means that they are created in a laboratory using genetic modification and engineering techniques. The genetic material of the organisms are altered to achieve desired characteristics. In food, this might yield a bigger piece of fruit or a crop that is resistant to various diseases or insects. Organisms are also modified for scientific research and pharmaceutical supplements. The organisms that are commonly modified include:

  • Bacteria
  • Yeast
  • Insects
  • Plants
  • Fish
  • Mammals

That covers plenty of the items that people put into their bodies every day. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration allows and regulates the usage of GMOs, there are still many concerns that people have about the quality of the items that have been modified. For example, many believe that the engineering process disrupts the genetic code so much that is alters the nutritional value of the food and creates toxins that can cause an allergic reaction in some people.

No Requirement To List GMOs

In the U.S., there is no requirement to label foods or private label nutritional supplements that contain GMOs. This can be upsetting to those who prefer to know what they are putting into their bodies. Fortunately, there are many brands who label their products non-GMO so that consumers can at least have the peace of mind of what the product does not contain.

Look For Non-GMOs

There are several private label nutritional supplements that we offer that are specified as being non-GMO. The list is fairly substantial compared to other labs, and some of the most requested and commonly used vitamins and supplements can be found in this form, such as:

When using private label nutritional supplements or vitamins, people are simply trying to do something to improve their health and the way they feel, and many choose natural products over prescribed chemical offerings. By choosing non-GMO products, you can assure consumers that they are getting a healthy product with no modification or distortion that can change the original composition.
