Krill Oil as a Health Supplement
Krill oil comes from a small animal that looks like a shrimp, but at the size of the average insect. These creatures are eaten by whales, what sharks, and other ocean creatures. It is named because in Norwegian, the translation of “krill” is literally “whale food”. Extracting the oil from the krill can allow it to be used medicinally for supplementing the diet for a variety of health needs.
There are a variety of different species of krill located in the oceans throughout the world and different brands of supplements will often use different varieties. To date, there is no scientific evidence to support that one species of krill is better than another for krill oil supplementation. It is mostly a manufacturing or sourcing decision. Krill oil contains a lot of fatty acids like fish oil, which can help with a variety of health issues in the body. As an Omega-3 product, it is most commonly sold for heart and brain health.
This supplement has been indicated for the use of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, PMS, painful cramps during periods, cancer, depression, stroke, osteoarthritis, and other conditions where improvement of circulation and the mind can improve the overall state of health. Of course, there is no proof that this supplement is effective in every person and it is not a cure, but like all supplements it does have benefits for the body.
When you are considering adding a supplement like krill oil to your diet, it’s important to talk to your doctor. That will allow you to get the facts about your own health and how this supplement might be able to help.
